This 400 square foot weekend retreat is an example of distilling needs down to what really matters. It demonstrates how different functions can be accommodated in a single space. Inspired by Japanese tradition, inside and out, this is an exquisite example of transforming a space for a variety of different uses. It elegantly accommodates living, dining, kitchen,sleeping,bathing and storage, all centered on a traditional tatami mat floor. No trees were removed for the house footprint. The building appears lifted into place with very little impact to the forest. Vehicle parking is limited to the edge of the forest hillside site, thus one walks a winding path among redwoods to reach the house.
